I Took the Florida Ready to Work Tests. Now What?

Karyn from Fleming Island, Florida wrote to us with this question:

Q:  “I took the WorkKeys assessment this week and I am wondering how this can be sent to a potential employer?”

 A: Hi Karyn – that’s a great question.

First, it’s important that you help educate your potential employer about the meaning and value of the assessments.  You took three assessments: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information.

These three assessments were selected because 1) research shows that these three fundamental skills are necessary for more than 85 percent of all jobs today; and 2) these core skills are the basis for most other career readiness programs across the country, providing national portability.  What we actually measure is your ability to learn tasks associated with almost any job.  If you scored at least a 4 on each assessment, you can let your employer know that you have the foundational skills for 65 percent of jobs today – that’s any job, not just a job you’ve done before in another company.

Here are some ways you can use your Florida Ready to Work certification.

  •  You can add it to your resume.  It might fit into your Summary of Qualifications at the top of your resume, or in a category like “Special Skills” or “Other Qualifications.”   “My 5-4-5 score on the Florida Ready to Work assessments means that I have the basic skills to perform 65% of all jobs in Florida.”
  • You can also use the score to see how well you match up to occupations you’re applying for. Work Keys, the assessments the Florida Ready to Work credential is based upon, have profiled thousands of jobs nationally. Occupational profiles identify the skill levels required for an occupation across jobs, companies, or industries.  At this link, http://www.act.org/workkeys/occuprof/ you can look up occupations and see what the required skill level is for the occupation (based on thousands of profiles.) Look for the AM (Applied Mathematics) LI (Locating Information) and RI (Reading for Information) to see how closely your skills match the occupation.  This is the assessment, by the way, that WorkSource uses to see if a candidate for a training scholarship will be able to succeed academically in a training program.
  • You can also use the Florida Ready to Work system to improve your skills if your score was not a good match for the occupation you’re pursuing. After you’ve taken the assessments, the program provides free online Courseware.  The online Courseware can be accessed from any computer anywhere, anytime.  You can build skills toward the job you really want to have.
  • You can print the certification from the PDF document you receive and attach it to your resume or cover letter.  Use the same language as above, or tease it (an old marketing technique.) “I invested three hours in taking the Florida Ready to Work assessments so I could understand my potential value to your company.  Would you agree to spend 30 minutes with me to learn it as well?”
  • Finally, you can look for employers that already recognize the credential and use it in their applicant careening process.  You’re in luck here; Northeast Florida has more companies that recognize and use the credential than any other region in Florida.  You’ll find a list of Northeast Florida employer partners here: http://www.floridareadytowork.com/employerpartners/ .

Best of luck in your job search.

Hi how many times can you take the assessment test? And if you make a 3
on it each time can you still get funds.

    1. An individual can take the assessments 3 times in a thirty day period. After the third time in a thirty day period, there will be a 30 day waiting period before you can retest. (This is the only restriction on the number of times an individual can complete the assessment.) All assessment retesting requires the individual to complete the remediation and successfully obtain a 90% on the post test at the level they’re required to attain (to be a match for the job.) Since we are measuring your ability to succeed in college level training, you must obtain a level 4 in all assessments to be eligible for WIA scholarships.

I suggest you look into the online assistance to prepare for taking the assessments again. Here are the instructions.

I am getting ready to enroll in Keiser Career College and they told me since i had a Silver Credential, I may be entitled to a 2000 dollar scholorship to assist in furthering my education. Any insight as to how to do this.

    1. Hi Helen – Congratulations on your credential. I’m not sure what Keiser has in mind, but if you’re considering a training scholarship from WorkSource, here is the link to the application process. http://www.worksourcefl.com/jobseekers/educational_opportunities.aspx. You can read the guidelines there.

I took this test in July and received the gold credential. I am still having difficulty landing a job. I have utilized the employer list of partners. Do you have any tips on how to market myself better using this credential? Or, perhaps, I am simply not targeting the right employers.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to comment. It’s true that some employers don’t automatically recognize the value of the credential. If you’d like to call me, maybe we can talk about how to discuss it in your interviews. Send me your phone number if you’d like to discuss – I can call you next week.
      Regards – Candace

    1. Hi Theresa – you have achieved a bronze level Ready to Work certification if you’re in Florida. (at least a 3 in each assessment.) Most businesses recognize a 3 as competent for their jobs. If you are seeking to train for a technical skill, you may need to raise the scores, since some jobs require higher scores.

    1. Congratulations on a strong showing on the assessments. My organization serves Jacksonville, but there may be employers in Polk County who recognize the credential. You can search for employers who consider the credential as an asset at http://www.floridareadytowork.com. Look for Employer Partners and search by region. Best of luck to you.

Ok thanks but let’s say hypothetically speaking if I were in the Jacksonville area what jobs would I qualify for. Just curious but thanks anyway.

      2. The scores measure whether you can master the skills of various levels and type s of jobs – but there is no registry that matches jobs to exact scores.

Hypothetically speaking, if I take the Placement test and do not score higher than a 3/80%, am I then opted out of taking the assessment all together? I have an appointment set tomorrow with a potential employer to take this assessment. She told me to go online and to take the Placements tests but I guess I’m not understanding how it works if I was not to score high enough on the placement test?

    Like

    1. If you do not score high enough on the placement test (a 3), you won’t go through with the full assessments, since the questions get harder as the test progresses. (In essence, the test ends at the point you strat missing most questions.) This is to prevent you from investing 3 hours to find you did not qualify for the certificate. There is remediation available online for people who cannot make a 3 or better in the assessed skills.

I see, so if I score a 3 or higher on the Placement test/Step 1, I’ll gain the certificate to take the Assessments tomorrow and don’t need to do Step 2 but if I don’t score higher than a 3 on the Placement test which is Step 1 then I need to continue to Step 2 which was, if I’m not mistaken the coursework? Is that the remediation you’re talking about? I’m just trying to gain understanding of how this works so please excuse me if I sound redundant.
